About me

Hey! I’m CJ Johnston, an enthusiastic Earth Science student at the Australian National University. I am passionate about sharing science with the world in a fun and accessible way, and can’t wait for you to join me on my science journalism journey!

When I was 14 years old, I was properly introduced to the world of science and science communication, through a week long Space Camp in Canberra, Australia. From here, my passion only grew stronger. I attended this camp many more times before eventually getting the opportunity to help run it. Helping young kids fall in love with science just as I did truly helped ignite my love of science education and outreach.

So why science journalism? I’ve always had a passion for writing, splitting my teenage years between plans of becoming a journalist or author, and plans of going into science research. So, I’ve finally decided to combine my passions, science and writing, to bring the world of science to the public.

Beyond science and writing, I enjoy reading, hiking, and spending time with my English Springer Spaniel, Maisie. I’m always up for a adventure in the great outdoors and love finding new dog friendly places and trails.

I have also completed multiple elective online courses in volcanology, and a field course based in New Zealand.

Rocketry

As an alum of the Australian National University Rocketry team, I have gained expertise in all aspects of rocketry, with the highlight of my time on the team being my involvement in the Spaceport America Cup, an international intercollegiate competition where I was the Throughout my time on the team I primarily helped and led projects that involved building the airframe, and designing and building the recovery system. Through personal projects, I have fully built and successfully flown many rockets, allowing me to achieve my Tripoli L2 Certification with a dual deploy rocket capable of reaching 5000ft that was entirely scratch-built, including featuring in-house made parachutes.
